Read Well...

We use the Read Well program as our core curriculum in kindergarten to teach literacy.  Read Well consists of two components: whole group instruction and small group instruction.  We work with these two components daily.  In whole group we work on a specific letter, the associated sound, and the writing piece.  We learn chants and cheers to go with each letter.  We also work on how to blend words together.  The "meat" of the program is in our small group.  Children work in their small group for 30 minutes daily.  These groups are tailored to each child on their ability level.  This allows for children who are at a higher level to be challenged and for others to have review.  In small group children work with a "magazine" and a book, which they can read.  At the end of each small group unit your child is assessed.  The can receive a "Strong Pass," "Weak Pass," or a "No Pass."  If your child receives a "Strong Pass" it means they have mastered all skills required in the unit and can move onto the next unit.  We ask for you to work with your child at home to strengthen these skills even further.  If your child receives a "Weak Pass" it means there is a skill or two which your child needs more work.  We move them onto the next unit, but provide practice for them to master the skill missed.  We also ask for you to practice the skill at home for reinforcement.  If your child receives a "No Pass" it means they did not master the skills necessary to move forward.  We may move them onto the next unit, but at a slower pace.  This also means your child will need reinforcement on skills in the "No Pass" unit.  In addition, we ask for you to practice these skills at home to help your child.  You will receive their "magazine" with the score on it.  When you receive the magazine you may find it confusing.  I have provided a video to help you understand what to do on the cover of the magazine and one of the inside pages.
